Ten years ago the members of Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) began campaigning for social justice. The authorities have been harassing them ever since.
Members of WOZA have been threatened and severely beaten by police. They are frequently arrested – charged with everything from ‘kidnapping and theft’ to ‘criminal nuisance’.
From speeches to the Amnesty International UK Conference they have told us that one thing that keeps them from even worse harassment and gives them some protection in their work is international campaigning to raise awareness and pressure the government in Zimbabwe.
